“Sultry folk, like a Romany gypsy cabaret show.” (Q Music)
The half-German, half-American indie-folk singer first caught the musical bug when her grandpa started playing his accordion to her as a young child. She fell in love with the instrument’s versatile, expressive nature and quirky noises.
Anya started to play in various bands when she went to university, including The Irrepressibles, Haunted Stereo, and Moneytree, before collaborating with artists such as Katy Carr, Jake Flowers, Helen McCookerybook, and Ana Silvera.
In 2010, she decided to form her own band and later that year released the “Turn-Turn-Turn” EP on Sotones Records. A few months later, in February 2011, the band found themselves touring the USA. Her debut album “An Estimation” will be out in September 2012, again on Sotones Records. Three singles have already been released – And Her Head, A Kiss and Italian Song – to critical acclaim.
Dubbed “surreal indie-folk”, the music has a rich modern edge, melodically expressing a range of emotions, from angry to a playful parody of love. Along with a strong, striking vocal style, Anya skilfully plays the accordion and piano, accompanied by her band of double bass, violin and guitar.
