Ozgen, Master Turkish Dancer
“An international star specializing in Turkish Romany and Oryantal dance…The pure love and passion he brings to his dancing is evident and infectious to anyone who has the pleasure of watching him.” (Gilded Serpent)
An internationally acclaimed Turkish dancer, teacher, choreographer and director, Ozgen’s reputation has taken him to all four corners of the world, generating a growing global fan base.
As a student, Ozgen showed great promise performing a traditional folk dancing in his native Cyprus. He moved to Istanbul after graduating from university to progress his dancing career. He joined the cast of the Night of the Sultans (Turkey’s ‘Riverdance’), where he combined ballet with contemporary and Oriental dance.
Along with performing, Ozgen obtained his professional dance teacher qualifications and joined Istanbul’s leading dance school, giving lessons to a wide variety of students including famous Turkish singers. His freestyle dance routines and celebrity contacts made him a popular choice for choreographing and performing in music videos for Turkey’s top pop stars, which in turn opened the door to him regularly appearing on popular Turkish TV programmes.
Having been propelled into the Turkish mainstream, the young Ozgen got itchy feet and felt it was time to try something new. He travelled to Europe and decided to settle in the UK. He wowed audiences with a performance at Planet Egypt, an important London bellydance night for the world’s top Oriental dancers. Since then, Ozgen has toured the world teaching and performing Turkish Oriental and Romany (Gypsy) dance.
He has just returned from a 3-month spell in Madrid that concluded with a gala performance of “One Night in Istanbul”. In the autumn he commences a tour of North and South American countries.
His performance at LIAF will include a demonstration workshop enabling the audience to participate, before delivering a short solo performance.
